Hans Tobacco: Side Effects, Why It Is Banned and What to Use Instead
What Hans chewing tobacco does to your mouth, why police seize it under India's gutka bans, and a herbal pouch that keeps the habit without the tobacco.

Short answer: Hans is chewing tobacco. It contains tobacco and nicotine, it is addictive, and long-term use of smokeless tobacco is linked to gum disease, white patches in the mouth and oral cancer. Tobacco is not allowed in food products in India, so Hans is sold illegally in most states. If what you really enjoy is the habit of tucking something under your lip, a herbal pouch with no tobacco and no nicotine lets you keep that part.
What is Hans?
Hans is a cheap chewing tobacco sold in small sachets. People put a pinch between the lip and the gum and keep it there, the same way others use Cool Lip. It is easy to hide, it gives a quick buzz, and that buzz is the reason so many people find it hard to stop.
Smokeless tobacco is a big habit in India. The government's second Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS-2, 2016-17) found that roughly one in five adults used it, which is more than the number who smoked (National Tobacco Control Programme).
What Hans does to your body
The tobacco sits against your gum for a long time and nicotine passes straight through the lining of your mouth. Over months and years, that leads to problems like these:
- Addiction. You start needing a packet to feel normal, and you get restless or irritable without one.
- Gum damage. The gum where you keep the pinch can recede and become sore, and your teeth get sensitive.
- Stained teeth and bad breath that brushing does not fully fix.
- White or red patches inside the mouth. Doctors call these leukoplakia and erythroplakia, and they take them seriously because some turn cancerous.
- A stiff mouth. Oral submucous fibrosis makes the inside of the cheeks tough, so opening your mouth wide gets harder.
- Cancer. The WHO's cancer agency lists smokeless tobacco as a cause of cancer in humans (IARC classifications), mainly of the mouth, throat and food pipe.
If you have a patch, ulcer or lump in your mouth that has not healed in two weeks, show it to a doctor or dentist.
Why Hans is banned
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has a rule, Regulation 2.3.4, that says tobacco and nicotine cannot be ingredients in any food product. Most states used it to ban gutka, pan masala with tobacco and flavoured chewing tobacco. In 2016 the Supreme Court told every state to enforce these bans strictly, including the trick of selling pan masala and tobacco in two separate sachets meant to be mixed later (LiveLaw).
How strictly the ban is enforced depends on the state, but in many places Hans is now a black-market product. In Kerala, for example, police found more than 26,000 packets of Hans in a cattle feed warehouse in Perumbavoor in September 2026 (Onmanorama), and over 6,000 sachets in a hidden cellar in Wayanad a few months earlier (Onmanorama). Anything bought that way has no quality control at all.

Keeping the habit without the tobacco
Ask people what they would miss about Hans and most of them do not say the tobacco. They say the moment: after a meal, on a long drive, during a break with friends.
That is the idea behind MAR Mouth Chill. You use it exactly like Hans, but there is nothing in it you need to worry about:
| Hans | MAR Mouth Chill | |
|---|---|---|
| Tobacco | Yes | No (0%) |
| Nicotine | Yes | No (0%) |
| How you use it | Pinch under the lip | Soft pillow under the lip |
| What you feel | Nicotine buzz | Icy menthol with clove and black pepper |
| Legal status | Banned as a food product | Legal herbal mouth freshener |
| Where you get it | Under the counter | Online, delivered anywhere in India |
Each packet has 20 pillows. Mint gives the strongest cool, and there are Coffee and Elaichi too.
If you want to quit
MAR is a mouth freshener, not a medicine, so treat it as a replacement habit rather than a cure. For real support, call India's free National Tobacco Quitline on 1800-11-2356, and have a look at our week-by-week plan on how to quit Hans.
