Hans vs Cool Lip: Which Is Worse, and What to Use Instead
Hans and Cool Lip are both smokeless tobacco. How they compare on nicotine, side effects and legality, and a tobacco-free pouch you can switch to.

Short answer: neither one is the safer choice. Hans is loose chewing tobacco in a sachet and Cool Lip is tobacco packed into a pouch, but both contain tobacco and nicotine, both are addictive and both do the same damage to your mouth over time. If you like the under-the-lip habit, the only switch that actually lowers the risk is to a pouch with no tobacco and no nicotine.
How they compare
| Hans | Cool Lip | MAR Mouth Chill | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Chewing tobacco in a sachet | Tobacco in a pouch | Herbal filter pillow |
| Tobacco | Yes | Yes | No (0%) |
| Nicotine | Yes | Yes | No (0%) |
| How you use it | Pinch under the lip | Pouch under the lip | Pillow under the lip |
| Mess | Loose, you need to spit | Less mess | No mess, no spitting |
| Legal status | Seized as a banned product | Seized as a banned product | Legal herbal mouth freshener |
Cool Lip pouches contain tobacco, the same as Hans.
Why people move from Hans to Cool Lip
A lot of people switch from Hans to Cool Lip because the pouch feels cleaner and is easier to hide. That is a real difference in convenience, but not in health. You are still keeping tobacco against your gum for long stretches, and that is what causes gum damage, white patches and, after years, oral cancer. We go into more detail in Hans side effects and Cool Lip vs cigarettes.
Legally they are in the same place too. Both are regularly seized by police in states that ban chewable tobacco. In one Wayanad case, the haul included 12,000 packets of Hans and 1,800 packets of Cool Lip (The South First).

The switch that changes the risk
Moving between tobacco brands does not change much. Taking the tobacco out does. MAR Mouth Chill is used exactly like Hans or Cool Lip, but the kick comes from herbs: menthol for the cool, clove and black pepper for warmth, and coriander, coffee or cardamom depending on the flavour.
You can try Mint, Coffee or Elaichi, delivered anywhere in India.
Ready to stop?
A herbal pouch can take the place of the habit, but it is not a medicine. Our 30-day plan to quit Hans works for Cool Lip too, and the free National Tobacco Quitline on 1800-11-2356 can help you through it.
